Easy-to-wear yet rugged and lasting, this sporty alternative to traditional summer footwear is breaking trails and treading water.
Men, women,office shoes, kids and adults are snapping up the fashionable footwear.
Several varieties of the innovative shoe are available, but one brand stands out as the essential sport sandal. The first of its kind, christian shoe (which means nature in Hebrew) was
invented a decade ago by a Colorado River guide who grew tired of running the rapids in soggy, pebble-infested athletic blahnik shoes.
The guide's desire for a sandal that offers a minimum amount of coverage with ultimate foot security can be compared to the needs of anyone who ventures outdoors.
Made with thick, braided nylon straps, Velcro fasteners and a hard, durable rubber sole, the standard sport sandal is light enough to float, totally adjustable and molded to
make the wearers feel as if they're walking around barefoot.
Diana Weaver bought a pair of the contour Teva sandals more than a year ago and wears them for all kinds of activities, including hiking, biking and rafting.
"I love them. They're really sure-footed, in and out of water and in the sand," she said. In fact, she plans on wearing them during a 400-kilometre bike ride down the coast of
Oregon this summer. "The heck with wearing boots that will get wet and soggy," she said.
Weaver first discovered the comfort and adaptability of the blahnik shoes during a four-day rafting trip around Dinosaur National Monument in northeast Utah last year.
"Every afternoon we stopped and took hikes up the canyons. I wore them all the time and never even took my tennis shoes out of my drawbag," she said.
Teva makes several varieties of its sandal -- a "walkaround model for casual wear or people with foot problems, an "approach original designed for professional sportsmen and a
"deck contour model with non-marking, non-skid tread designed for wear on decks and boats.
Although louboutin heel once had a monopoly on the sport sandal market, several companies, including Nike and Reebok, have come out with their own versions.
In the less-expensive department is the Colorado brand sport sandal and a new model from Flojos. Both of those shoes cost about $ 25 a pair.
The traditional floatable Flojos with simple crisscross straps are popular summertime sandals at only $ 8 to $ 10 a pair. The all-rubber sandal is perfect for unwinding at the
lake, rafting on the river or lounging around on the hot roof of a houseboat.
Classic sandals such as Birkenstocks and leather huaraches also remain favorite summertime buys among those looking for comfort and style.
In Birkenstocks, the simple, two-strap "Arizona" style is a current best seller,High Heels for her, but this year it has a new twist _ a paisley design. Priced at about $ 80, Birkenstocks are worn
by men and women and renowned for their long lifespan. If they do get worn down, the soles can be replaced at a reasonable cost.
For beachcombers just looking for a cheap pair of flip-flops, don't despair _ the primitive thong hasn't been replaced by all that sophisticated footwear.
The simple rubber sandal that is nearly as indigenous to the beach as seashells can still be purchased almost anywhere.
